How to do this technique
- The sound of the vowel a in Sanskrit is like the sound of a in America.
- In this practice, A should be continuously chanted out loud, or silently in the mind. If you are chanting mentally, you can continuously chant it. This is the more common way to practice this meditation. If you chant it out loud, then there are two ways of chanting this vowel.
- It can be chanted with breath retention, or while breathing out. In the first instance, one should inhale, and while holding the breath, chant AAAA … Then after a while one should breathe out, breathe in again, hold the breath, and chant aaa . . . In this case, a is only chanted when the breath is retained.
- The second way to practice this is easier. Breathe in and while breathing· out, chant AAAA … When the breath is fully exhaled, breath in again, and while breathing out, continue to chant the vowel a.
- In the second method, the breath does not have to be retained. In this instance, a is only chanted while breathing out.
- What is the significance of the vowel a? Why is it used for this practice? In Kashmir Shaivism, there is a Theory of the Alphabet. In that theory, a represents the consciousness of God. Chanting a increases our level of awareness. Ultimately, we reach a state of full awareness. Chanting a sound, any sound, also makes it difficult for one to think.
- When a person is chanting, they are chanting not thinking. In this state, the mind is quiet and free of thoughts. When the mind is quiet for prolonged periods, it permanently becomes quiet. This is the main benefit of chanting a sound. While chanting, the flow of thoughts is stopped.
